Where the Jobs Are: 5 Hot Industries Hiring in the New Year

Need a civilian job when you get out of the military? The Labor Department provides a monthly report that shows which employers are doing the most hiring.

Professional/business services

Employers in this category hired 52,000 people in December, including 35,000 in administrative and waste services, 9,000 in computer systems design and related services, and 5,000 in architectural and engineering services. In 2014, monthly gains in this category averaged 61,000 per month.


This industry added 48,000 jobs in December, a jump from recent months. Of those, specialty trade contractors hired 26,000 – equally split between residential and commercial contractors. Heavy and civil engineering construction also hired 12,000, and employment in non-residential building grew by 10,000.. Food services and drinking places

Employers here hired 44,000 in December, compared to an average of 30,000 per month throughout 2014.


One of the hottest industries over the last 10 years, health care added 34,000 jobs in December – including 16,000 in ambulatory health care services (doctor and dentist offices, outpatient care centers, home healthcare services, etc.), 11,000 at nursing and residential care facilities and 7,000 at hospitals. Healthcare added an average of 26,000 jobs per month in 2014, and 17,000 per month in 2013.

The Labor Department report includes unemployment numbers, including data on veteran

In December, the jobless rate for all veterans was 4.7 percent, compared to 5.3 percent for non-veterans.
