5 Tips for Better Civilian Work-Life Balance

Civilian Work-Life Balance

Military life is very structured and you are told where to be, when and for how long. After transition, not having a strict schedule is great but it definitely takes getting used to. Balancing when you should be working, studying or just relaxing can be challenging.

We have a few tips on how to keep that perfect civilian work-life balance.

Make a Schedule

Buying a planner and writing down your schedule for the week can be really helpful for getting everything you need done. Whether you are in school or at work, there is always a deadline for something. Writing due dates, assignments, projects and reminders for reference can help you stay caught up and to avoid stress.

Schedule Free-Time

When you plan your week, make it a point to schedule time to do things you love as well. If you have a hobby then put aside a couple hours a week to do the thing that makes you happy. Relaxation is important too. Schedule dates and activities with friends and family so that you can balance a social life. This gives you something to look forward to amongst all the work.

Make Sure to Schedule a G.I. Party

Mopping the floor and laundry are not the most exciting thing that will fill your planner, but it is important. Scheduling a set time each week to clean up the house, wash clothes and other chores will keep your home clean and will save time in the long term.

Combine Your Errands

Running errands multiple times a week can be time-consuming and frustrating. Think about all the things you need to do and try to make it in one trip. Can you pick up your dry-cleaning, get groceries, drop off a package and go to the bank all in one trip? Not only does this save time and gas money, it also leaves you feeling accomplished for how much you got out of the way-leaving time for other activities.

Get Your Exercise

Without the constant schedule of physical activity, it can be easy to fall into a routine that doesn’t include going to the gym. Make some time each week to work-out. Not only does exercise keep you looking and feeling great, it is a great stress reliever.
