The Home Depot
G.I. Jobs » What advantages do military personnel have over their peers of the same age and education level?
The Home Depot | Military personnel tend to be very mature and responsible. They are accustomed to working in an organization that expects them to set high individual standards and objectives — and meet them. They are also accustomed to working in an environment that depends on exceptional levels of teamwork to succeed. They are confident, self-reliant, resourceful and disciplined. In addition, many military personnel have specialized experience in areas such as plumbing, electrical or carpentry that is transferable to positions in our stores.
G.I. Jobs » What are the common mistakes you see on military/veteran resumes?
The Home Depot | All resumes need to be focused and clearly showcase accomplishments, accompanied with measurable results. In addition, military resumes should highlight transferable skills and military experience in terminology that is widely understandable.
G.I. Jobs » Is relocating essential to promote within your company?
The Home Depot | Headquartered in Atlanta, The Home Depot has over 1,900 stores throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Not all opportunities require relocation. However, by being open to relocation as you build your career with the company, you will increase your exposure to a variety of opportunities and ensure that you gain a breadth of career experiences.
In addition, with locations in every state, most major metropolitan areas and many rural towns across the nation, it is possible to transfer your career at The Home Depot and maintain your associate status when you change duty stations or separate from the military, depending on job availability.
G.I. Jobs » What types of positions does your company recruit military for?
The Home Depot | In September 2004, The Home Depot launched “Operation Career Front,” an initiative with the U.S. Departments of Defense, Labor and Veterans Affairs to actively recruit U.S. military jobseekers, including military spouses, veterans, separating active duty service members, National Guardsmen and reservists for positions across the company.
With 325,000 associates and over 1,900 stores throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico, The Home Depot is able to provide a vast array of career opportunities. In addition to full- and part-time opportunities in our stores, The Home Depot offers numerous professional opportunities at our Store Support Center in Atlanta and at other regional offices around the country.
G.I. Jobs » Describe one of these positions (responsibilities, daily duties, working hours, etc.).
The Home Depot | One key area where The Home Depot recruits from the military is for our Store Leadership Program (SLP). SLP is a challenging, 24-month rotational program where participants build a strong foundation of leadership, technical and strategic skills that will prepare them to succeed as a store manager and beyond.
To qualify, candidates must have a minimum of four years leadership experience in a business environment or as a commissioned military officer. Although the program was not specifically created to target military personnel, nearly 50 percent of those accepted are former military.
