Johnson Controls / Military hires bring a level of leadership experience that is very valuable to Johnson Controls. They bring a strong work ethic, solid training and are used to hard work. They know how to evaluate situations and prioritize issues.

G.I. Jobs.. What issues/surprises do military transitioners / veterans need to be aware of when entering the civilian workforce?

Johnson Controls / They have to rely more on their ability to motivate people rather than intimidate people. In the civilian workforce there is not always a clear chain of command. You can not force somebody to do something because you are senior to them. They need to be flexible and sensitive to the political environment they are in. They need to fully understand what the key business drivers are for their company and tailjohnson-controls219x292or their actions to attaining them.

G.I. Jobs.. What are the most common mistakes you see on military / veterans’ resumes?

Johnson Controls / The failure to translate their military job assignments into terminology that is meaningful to a civilian reader is one of the biggest challenges. Drop the TLA’s and translate their accomplishments into civilian terminology. How does what they have accomplished relate to the key business drivers of the organization and how does their talent align with the requirements for this specific role.

G.I. Jobs.. Is relocating essential to being promoted within your company?

Johnson Controls / Relocating is not essential for a promotion but it is certainly a benefit to the individual to experience other aspects of Johnson Controls businesses.

G.I. Jobs.. Can a new hire stay in this position for an entire career or do you require new hires to “move up or move out” like the military does?

Johnson Controls /
If they are good at what they do they could theoretically keep doing it for a long time.

G.I. Jobs.. What is the average starting pay for this position?

Johnson Controls / There are a number of variables that go into determining an individual’s compensation with Johnson Controls.

Johnson Controls / My father “Captain Conover” was in the USMC from 1947 until 1970. He fought at the battle of Chosun and did two tours in Vietnam. I have two nephews at the Air Force Academy.
