Tell us about yourself:
Getting out of active duty is not an easy task, so when you decide you want to go to school, it's hard to navigate thorugh a process that is unfamiliar to you. With Buffalo State College Veteran Services
Office, they make the process …smooth.
What prompted you to return to school?
My career in the Air Force was similar to the Social Work field, which I enjoyed so much with helping people that I decided to continue once I got out of the service.
What military education benefits, such as the GI Bill, did you use?
G.I. Bill; As a Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31) receiver, Chapter 31 covers my tuition, supplies, as well as a housing allowance.
What has your experience been like as a student?
Buffalo State College is a military friendly school. They have services that are geared to help a veteran or active military student to become acclimated to college life and helps students until their graduation day. The Veteran Services office is a liaison between Regional Office of Veteran Affairs and Buffalo State College.
What challenges did you have adjusting to campus culture after military life?
Yes, there is always an adjustment when transitioning from military life to civilian life, especially becoming a full time student. However, BSC was very helpful with their "one-stop shop" for military students with the admission's process. BSC has a veteran coordinator who helps to introduce military studenst to college.
Do you believe your military experience has made you a better student?
As a veteran, I was taught to overcome barriers, which has helped me become a better student as well as help from the Veteran Services' office at school with any barriers that i come upon.
What advice do you have for veterans returning to school?
Make sure you talk to the Veteran Coordinator on campus to guide you thorugh the process. There are a lot of benefits that many veterans, active military personnel, guard and reserves as well as spouses and dependents do not know about which the Veteran's office can educate you on!
