Retail is More Than Sales

Retail-is-More-Than-Sales

After two decades of service in the Army, Lt. Col. Rob Moyer knew it was time for a new mission. But like many veterans preparing to transition, he faced a lingering question: Would his military experience be understood—or even valued—in the corporate world?

“I knew I had strong leadership abilities, a proven work ethic and a knack for building meaningful relationships,” Moyer said. “But I wasn’t sure how these ‘soft skills’ would be perceived.”

Moyer, a signal officer, had built his Army career managing tactical communications, mentoring junior officers and overseeing complex technology acquisitions. When it came time to transition, he found support in the Hiring Our Heroes program, which connected him with Verizon.*

“Verizon made a significant investment in the program and in veterans like myself,” he said. “The team at Verizon—especially Kedrick Harris and Michael McCoy—went above and beyond to ensure I had the resources and mentorship I needed.”

Verizon became Moyer’s first civilian employer in September 2022. He began in internal audit, a role he described as “project management light,” and quickly progressed to supporting store operations. Today, he serves as chief of staff to the vice president of retail distribution for the Atlantic South market.

“My role involves supporting day-to-day operations, helping to drive strategic initiatives and working on special projects that improve customer and employee experiences,” he said.

Retail might not seem like an obvious next step, but Moyer found parallels in the pace, impact and people-focus of the work. “Retail provides the unique opportunity to have a direct impact on both the business and the community,” he said. “That really appealed to me.”

One of his proudest milestones at Verizon was leading a merchandising project that boosted traffic and awareness at retail locations. “It was a milestone in my personal growth. I was able to take everything I’d learned in the military … and apply it in a completely new context.”

Moyer is quick to dispel the misconception that retail is just about sales. “Verizon offers veterans a range of career paths, from operations and leadership to marketing, project management, and even technology,” he said. “The skills veterans bring … are incredibly valuable in retail.”

For those preparing to leave the military, Moyer offers this advice: “Focus on translating your military leadership experience into the language of business. Be confident in your experience, and don’t be afraid to highlight how your leadership can drive results.”

He also encourages fellow veterans to embrace the unknown. “I spent a lot of time worrying … but once you learn to speak the same language, you realize how valuable your experience truly is.”

After a lifetime of moves, including three years in Afghanistan, Moyer and his family now call Florida home. When he’s off the clock, he enjoys the beach, boating and playing pickleball with his 8-year-old son.
