Bellevue University

Program Type/Area of Study: Human Resources Management

Tell us about yourself:

I searched for a military-friendly university where I could complete my higher education while also continuing to serve my country. Bellevue University came highly recommended by supervisors and peers due to the flexibility of online classes which is highly important given the current deployment tempo.

What prompted you to return to school?

My long-term goal is to make a career out of the military. After serving half of my commitment as an enlisted member, I recognized higher education was paramount for the route I desired most. As to also lead by example for my son, I decided to challenge myself once more.

What military education benefits, such as the GI Bill, did you use?

G.I. Bill; My Post 9/11 G.I. Bill benefits package included full coverage (100%) of tuition and fees, a monthly living allowance, and an annual book stipend.

What challenges did you have adjusting to campus culture after military life?

I honestly felt intimidated with the idea of returning to school, but the adjustment was relatively easy given the diversity found on campus. Since my military uniform is a large portion of my identity, the support offered at the Military-Veteran Services Center allowed me to fully let my guard down.

Do you believe your military experience has made you a better student?

Military discipline and unwavering dedication significantly enhanced my quality of work by graduating Summa Cum Laude (3.95 GPA). Furthermore, an attention-to-detail attitude facilitated my acceptance into graduate school by way of the prestigious Health Professions Scholarship Program. I am currently serving as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.

What advice do you have for veterans returning to school?

Bring forward your military-oriented work ethics and values into the civilian sector. Due to the experiences we have all encountered, use them as stepping stones rather than barriers. The Military-Veteran Services Center is an outstanding resource unique to Bellevue University, so know you are not alone through the transitional process.
