Johnathan Washington–Customer Service Technician              Windstream success story

Military Branch: United States Army
Years Served: 2013-2017
Highest pay grade: E4, Specialist
MOS: Signal Support Systems Specialist
Age:  23

Why did you enlist in the military?

I enlisted in the military to make a path for my own life, while following in my parents’ footsteps.

What was the most difficult part of transitioning into civilian life?

The most difficult part for me was letting go of friends who became my family in the military.

What worked best in your job search?

Reaching out to family and friends and going to websites for veterans. Also, using social media was very effective for getting my resume out to many employers.

What was the hardest interview question you were asked?

Are you willing to relocate?

During your search, what attributes of a potential job were of most value to you?

Shared values and work/life balance. Being in the military, I was part of a team and I didn’t want that feeling to end, but I wanted to be home more to watch my family grow.

What skills learned in the military do you apply to your job today?

How to remain calm, and always find a solution to any problem.

Best advice for transitioning service members?

I say to my fellow service members, “No matter how dark the tunnel may seem, have no fear. Just keep moving forward and you’ll find the light at the end of the tunnel.”
