When Dan Taylor retired from the Air Force after three decades, the Command Chief Master Sergeant knew he wasn’t done serving. But the transition came with one major fear: “Finding the right career fit for me and my family in the next chapter of our life.”
Dan found that fit at Akima* – RiverTech, where he now manages operations supporting 48 Air Force flying squadrons. His journey offers a powerful reminder to fellow transitioning service members: do your homework, be yourself and don’t settle for less than a mission—and workplace—you believe in.
What was your biggest challenge when you retired?
My main challenge was seeking a work environment that prioritizes service and customer care over purely financial motives. My desire was to find another work family that was dedicated to serving and doing right for the customer and employees.
How did you overcome this challenge?
I researched company dynamics, reviewed comments from previous employees, and asked insightful questions during the interview process to find a position where the company I worked for had a desire in taking care of their team members and customers.
Why did you choose this career field?
My military career dealt with taking care of and interacting with team members. With my current position, I am able to work with the Air Force Flying Operations, providing the right family dynamic, camaraderie, and ability to serve the military again.
Why did you choose to work in the defense industry?
I love the smell of jet fuel in the morning. I appreciate the collaborative spirit of a “one team, one fight” mentality in getting things done.
Is it your first job out of the military?
Yes, this was my first job out of the military, and I feel fortunate to be part of a company with strong work ethic, and dedicated team members.
How does your military training and experience help you in your civilian career?
My military experience equipped me with valuable insights to leadership, operations management, human capital, and logistics which were applicable across various military roles.

What mistakes would you urge transitioning service members to avoid?
Seek positions that align with your personality and passion. Be genuine during the interview process to find the right company that shares and aligns with your core values.
