When most people think of jobs in the hospitality industry, positions like server, manager, housekeeper, front desk clerk or chef likely come to mind.

But this industry is much more than just hotels and restaurants – any type of business that is dedicated to customer satisfaction and meeting guests’ leisure and entertainment needs would fall into the “hospitality” category. This would include cruise lines, amusement parks, resorts and casinos.

According to Deloitte’s 2018 Travel and Hospitality Industry Outlook, travel and tourism is one of the world’s fastest-growing sectors, with bookings reaching approximately $1.6 trillion in 2017 and growth expected to continue in 2018. With more people traveling to new locales (international travel departures have more than doubled from 600 million to 1.3 billion over the last two decades, according to the Deloitte* survey), there’s never been a better time to seek opportunities in this thriving industry.

Food and concierge services are just a small portion of the wide-ranging jobs in this field. For those who prefer to work behind the scenes, there are opportunities available in everything from accounting and finance to human resources and IT. If you’re looking for a career in an industry that values the needs of others first, hospitality could be a great fit.

Check out these veterans who transitioned to successful civilian careers in the hospitality industry and work in positions you’d likely never think of.

Engineering Project Administrator,  MGM Grand Hotel & Casino

What do you do? I work in the project engineering department at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. I write scopes of work, conduct site walks with vendors, award bids, submit purchase requisitions, track project progress and budgets, create receipts and monitor payments. I was also elected to serve as the co-chair for MGM Resorts’ Veterans Employee Network Group.

What’s the coolest thing about your job? I love doing work that’s visible and long-lasting; having that tangible finished product. I also really love working for a company that supports the local community. I am involved in the company’s employee network groups and sponsored volunteer opportunities.

What’s the biggest challenge? The cultures are very different. In corporate America, you can’t speak to your co-workers the same way you do in the military. Even though we develop strong relationships in the workplace, it does feel very different than my military family. After going through training and deployments together, I really felt a special bond with my co-workers because we shared these huge life experiences.

Field Recruiting Manager/Military Program Manager, G6 Hospitality LLC*

What do you do? I manage a field recruiting team of two recruiters and three contracting coordinators. I also manage G6 Hospitality’s Veteran and Military Spouse hiring initiative “Operation Next Step,” which was launched in 2014. I’m proud to have taken on leadership of this effort, helping G6 achieve their hiring goals.

How did you get your job? I found this job while searching for Military Friendly® Employers in my local area. It was important to me to be associated with an organization that not only hired military, but also supported them as employees.

Any funny incidents during your first days on the job? When I first started working at G6 Hospitality, I noticed that I would stand at parade rest when the executives were around. Also, I use military time whenever I reference a time and always spell everything phonetically until I correct myself. Lastly, I can become very anxious when I am outside and do not have a cover on my head.

Kevin Gray

Chief Engineer, Hilton Seattle Airport and Conference Center, Hilton

What do you do? I coordinate and manage all mechanical and electrical operations, maintenance, energy management programs and employee development programs to the highest quality standards and property operating objectives while providing direct supervision of the engineering staff.

How long before separation did you begin your job search? Not soon enough. I started a month before getting out due to the needs of the Navy sending me back out to sea with a different crew. Honestly, this should be something that you are looking into two years out – not necessarily submitting résumés, but finding and learning about careers you are interested in.

Any advice for transitioning service members? Start earlier than you think you need to. I recommend contacting CivComReady.org, a nonprofit whose goal is ensuring all service families (service members and spouses) have a job before leaving the military.[/vetProfileCont]
