After two career doors slammed shut in his face, Ryan A. Green found a third that opened to an exciting career in banking. Green, 26, is a foreign exchange trading and sales analyst for PNC. He supports the sales team in Pittsburgh, helping corporate clients with foreign currency trades. “The best thing about my job is working in a fast-paced, challenging environment around intelligent people who are hard-working,” Green says.

Door #1. It wasn’t easy getting there. Green graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, then began flight officer training in Pensacola, Fla. After two years, a medical issue led to his involuntary separation.

Door #2. During his service, Green developed an interest in the financial markets. “I had started a company during my time in the military focused on providing educational and coaching services to help individuals learn and comprehend the foreign exchange market,” he says. “After two years, the company unfortunately failed.”

Door #3. “The experience, however, gave me great insight and opened doors to work in the foreign exchange here at PNC.”

Preparing Plan B. When Green realized his Navy career might be cut short, he began networking on LinkedIn and met a fellow veteran who was running a PNC booth at a Service Academy Career Conference. The veteran connected him to someone in his area of interest. Once on board, Green faced extensive training. “It really helped me get up to speed, due to may lack of experience in banking,” he says.

Culture Shock. The high cost of civilian health insurance was a shock, and adjusting to the banking lingo was a challenge for Green. “I was not trained as a finance major, nor is the language similar to what was used in the military.”

Take It to the Bank. His best advice to you? “Network, network, network. What helped me most was reaching out to and meeting as many people as possible who have the influence to open doors for me. In today’s world it’s easy to find and connect with the higher ups who can really open doors for you. Don’t be afraid to reach out to them.”[/fusion_text][/fullwidth]
