Where the Jobs Are: 5 Industries That Are Hiring

industries that are hiring

More than 200,000 people got hired in May, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report released on Friday. If you’re getting ready to drop your pack and hang up your boots, here are a few industries that are hiring vets.

Health care

No surprise here. This booming industry added 34,000 jobs in May, including 23,000 in ambulatory health care services (physicians’ offices, outpatient care centers, home health care services, etc.) and 7,000 in hospitals. Health care has steadily been adding jobs, even through the worst of the recession. Don’t have a military medical job? No problem. Employers in this sector also need IT and HR professionals, office managers, maintenance and security – just a list a few. If you DO want a health care career, use your GI Bill to get trained.

Professional and business services

This sector added 55,000 jobs in May, on par with its average monthly gain over the last 12 months. Jobs included 7,000 each in computer systems and design and related services, and in management and technical consulting.

Leisure and hospitality

Companies like Hilton Worldwide and Disney recruit veterans for an amazing variety of positions. In May, employers in food services and drinking places hired 32,000 people. Over the last year, 311,000 have found jobs in this industry.

Transportation and warehousing

16,000 folks found jobs here in May, higher than the 9,000 per month average over the last 12 months. Best part? Transportation employers vigorously recruit veterans.

Manufacturing

OK, this sector changed little in May. But over the past 12 months, manufacturing employers have added 105,000. Not too shabby.
