Job Description:

My role as a Field Staffing Manager is to focus on the hourly talent acquisition process.  I support The Home Depot US retail stores, MET, and Supply Chain business partners in ensuring the company hires a diverse and high performing workforce.  The Field Staffing Manager identifies staffing trends and launches enterprise-wide staffing initiatives to address issues, improve processes and implement best in-class retail staffing practices. As a partner to the field associates, I focus on building relationships and spreading the word about The Home Depot being an employer of choice through building community partnerships.

How did you get the job?

I have been with the Home Depot for almost 10 years now, and the key is to keep learning!  Volunteer for projects, and do not be afraid to raise your hand for something new.  More relationships are built which leads to more opportunities coming your way through this exposure..  This opportunity arose because of the previous work I had done; the leadership team thought I would be a good fit.

Why did you choose this job?

An opportunity to learn more about the company and I really wanted to work closer with field partners.

What is the best part of the job?

My team! We support each other, share best practices, and encourage each other along the way. I also really enjoy being able to help our stores with finding the next orange blooded associate!

What was the biggest transition headache?

When I started at The Home Depot I was still in the reserves; so the difficulty was really explaining to my leadership what that meant; what that commitment was. I have to say, I have never experienced a more supportive environment in that regard.  Whenever I needed to be at training or attend a school, my leadership was more than understanding.  I do think for some, though, the most difficult thing is the translation of skills. While the civilian business community has a hard time understanding military service skills or how to translate them; they have the initiative to learn. The amount of responsibility bestowed upon young military members is tremendous–it is just not something that mainstream business does.  We will continue to work on bridging that gap and The Home Depot is dedicated to doing that.

What skills did you bring with you?

Having served so many years in the military and being in leadership positions has given me some real transferable skills.

  1. Leadership & Follower-ship – being a good leader is as important as knowing when and how to be a good follower.
  2. Looking out for others – the team is everything because it can’t be done alone
  3. Critical thinking skills – the ability to analyze, plan and execute the mission with the end in mind.
  4. Difficult Decision making skills – being able to make decisions in stressful situations when you don’t have all of the information.
  5. Initiative – going above and beyond and completing tasks with haste.
